Crude at $85 and the current account: the arithmetic, without the narrative

A roughly $5 fall in crude improves India's current account deficit by something like $7–8 billion, other things equal. That is the arithmetic. The narrative — what it means for the index — is where people overreach.

The pass-through is real but slow

Lower crude helps the deficit, the rupee, and the margins of oil-consuming sectors. But the correlation with the index is not stable; it changes sign around certain price bands, and the lag is long enough that trading the headline rarely works.

Figure 1 — CAD sensitivity to the crude price

The useful takeaway is sectoral, not directional: know which names actually keep the benefit, and size the view to the arithmetic rather than the story.
